Fort Wainwright (U.S. Army) - (Cogeneration - Electricity and Heat) |
Central Heat and Power Plant was constructed in the 1940s with a major addition in the mid 1950s due to the Korean conflict. The plant has six active coal burning boilers and operational steam turbines. The plant has a capacity of 900,000 per hour pounds of steam for heat and 20 megawatts of electricity. Two major refurbishment projects were recently completed; one in 2003 and the other in 2005. The plant is now operating with a full-stream baghouse which was completed in 2004. A new air-cooled condenser for the turbines was completed in 2007 which eliminates the adverse ice fog conditions affecting the Richardson Highway during extreme cold winter months. The plant burns approximately 230,000 tons per year.

Eielson Air Force Base - (Cogeneration - Electricity and Heat) |
Central Heat and Power Plant has utilized Usibelli coal since construction in 1952. The plant operates six boilers and five steam turbine generators. The plant is capable of 25 megawatts of electrical generation. A full-stream baghouse and closed capture dust control system are installed and operational. The plant burns approximately 196,500 tons per year; approximately 400 tons per day in the summer and 800 to 900 tons per day in the winter.

Clear Air Force Station - (Cogeneration - Electricity and Heat) |
Central Heat and Power Plant began operations in 1961. The plant operates three boilers and three steam turbine generators for a total capability of 22.5 megawatts. The plant has been operating with a full-stream baghouse and Continuous Opacity Monitoring System (COMS) since August 2005. Clear AFS burns approximately 58,000 tons of coal per year. |

Aurora Energy, LLC - (Cogeneration - Electricity and Heat) |
Power Plant and District Heat System operates in the core area of the City of Fairbanks. The plant began operating in 1952 and was purchased from the Municipal Utility System in 1998. The plant produces steam and hot water for approximately 165 district heat customers. The plant is capable of providing 25 megawatts of wholesale electrical power generation to the local electric cooperative, Golden Valley Electric Association. The plant operates four boilers and three turbine generators. A full-stream baghouse was installed during 2006. The plant burns approximately 210,000 tons of coal per year. |

University of Alaska Fairbanks - (Cogeneration - Electricity and Heat) |
Central Heat and Power Plant was constructed in 1964. The plant operates three stoker boilers and three steam turbines with 13 megawatts capability. The plant burns approximately 60,000 tons of coal per year. The plant has a full-stream baghouse. The plant provides space heat and air conditioning on campus. Future plans call for the expansion of electrical generation and steam production.

Healy#1 Power Plant is a 25 megawatt pulverized-coal plant built in 1967. The plant provides base-loaded energy and capacity to the local utility and has been recognized for achieving high performance standards for the past several years. Healy #1 is located adjacent to the Usibelli Coal Mine property and is referred to as a "mine mouth plant." The Healy Clean Coal Project is co-located with Healy #1 power plant. Healy #1 is the darker gray colored building in the foreground.

Hyundai Merchant Marine - South Korea - (Export) |
Usibelli Coal Mine has exported Alaskan coal to Honam Power Plant in South Korea since 1984. During the period 1984 to 2002, approximately 750,000 tons were shipped to South Korea through the Coal Terminal at the Port of Seward. In 2003 UCM began shipping 400,000 metric tons of coal each year. During 2007 UCM will deliver 500,000 tons per year for a period of three years.

Glencore Ltd. - South America - (Export) |
The major international coal trading firm, Glencore Ltd., has developed a market for Alaskan coal in the country of Chile. Since initial test shipments to Chile in 2004, Usibelli has exported more than 500,000 metric tons to three utilities that operate power plants along the west coast of Chile. The potential for long-term, large-quantity sales appears promising.
