The Nenana Coal Field is currently the only active coal producing field in the State of Alaska and has produced a record 50 million tons of coal.
Usibelli Coal Mine holds four active permits in the Nenana Coal Field: Poker Flats, Gold Run Pass, Two Bull Ridge and Rosalie mines. They produce an average of 1.5 million tons of coal per year. The majority of production is consumed by the domestic Alaskan electrical energy market; however, approximately 500,000 tons per year are shipped overseas to Pacific Rim destinations.

Usibelli Coal Mine also holds two exploration permits in this field; Hoseanna Creek/Emma Creek and Healy Valley exploration permits.
The Nenana coal basin consists of ten coal fields partially or completely separated by erosion.
Coal is found in the Usibelli Group, a sequence of five formations of poorly consolidated continental sedimentary rocks of late Eocene and early-to-late Miocene age. |
